It was the old Maigret once more. Powerful, placid, sure of himself.

“Listen, son.”

It was in such complete contrast to the pitch of Radek’s voice, his nervous manner, his keen eyes, which sparkled with another sort of intelligence altogether.

Maigret was by twenty years the elder, and the difference could be felt.

“Listen, son.”

Janvier, as he overheard the words, could hardly keep from laughing, so delighted was he to see his chief once more at the top of his form.

The latter merely added, with the same casual good humor:

“We’ll meet again one of these days, don’t you worry.” Whereupon he nodded to the barman, stuffed his hands in his coat pockets, and went to the door.

“As far as I can tell, they’re the ones,” said the man in the Hôtel George V, examining the bundles of money that Maigret had handed him. “But there was much more than that. There was ten thousand in hundred-franc notes, the rest in thousands.

A hundred thousand francs altogether.

A few moments later he got through to the bank.

“Hello! Have you got the numbers of the notes I sent for yesterday? Not the thousands—only the hundreds.” He jotted down the numbers with a pencil, hung up, and turned to the inspector.

“Yes, they’re the ones. I hope there’s not going to be any trouble.”

“Not the slightest… Are Mr. and Mrs. Kirby in?”

“They went out half an hour ago.”

“You saw them yourself?”

“As clearly as I see you.”

“Are there many exits?”

“Two. But the other’s used only by the staff.”
